BIO
Nina Djekić is a Slovenian artist and
choreographer based in Amsterdam. Having formal training in choreography, her
practice revolves around notions of movement and embodiment as entangled with
language. With ongoing research interrogating how to productively conflate the
conventions of writing with those of movement notation and scoring. Spanning
various mediums; performance, print, installation, video and sound, Djekić’s
practice approaches language as more than just a vessel to propel choreographic
thought but as what actively shapes such thought as well. Recently her research
has extended to explore vocabularies with potential to breech distance between
the human and botanical ontologies. Finding inspiration in situated folk
knowledge, various forms of incantations and speculative fictions with focus on
feminine-botanical kinship. Her work has been presented
in exhibitions as well as performance contexts and book fairs in both Europe
and abroad (Frascati Theatre, Ellen de Bruijne Projects (Dolores), starch, NTU
CCA, Singapore Art Book Fair, LAB111, de Appel).

Twigs, carefully placed pebbles and folded or pierced leaves perform as
a transient choreographic system. Path Finder explores a speculative vocabulary
developed through and within my familiar forest. Articulating through the
dynamic between the materiality of found materials and the information embedded
within. Attuning to the details within our environments, can we translate them
into a score or a poem?

When looking into the remnants of landscape-tied spirituality in
Slovenia I came across a mention of a practical language now mostly forgotten.
A system of signs once present within peripheral and clandestine rural
communities, that was used to navigate surrounding landscapes. Scattered cues
intelligible only to their kin would punctuate their movements and experiences
and speak of their whereabouts.

Plant is a Poem (Sountrack) 2023Soundtrack, 15 min

Plant is a Poem (She writes the spell into the soil), 2023
Text score on silk, oak gall ink, 2 x 115 x 350 cm

Plant is a Poem, is a series of works comprising of a
soundtrack and a text score printed on silk with oak gall ink once commonly used in medieval
manuscripts and documents. The
work draws inspiration from various vegetal incantations
aiming to explore how languages we speak reflect and are (re)shaped by
our relationships with plants. The sound piece enmeshes
human voice and poetic narration within an atmospheric soundscape, it centres onomatopoeia as a vocal tool to explore the limits between noise
and meaning-formation.

Incantations, spells and utterances are often thought of as magical tools of
enchantment. Commonly believed to unlock plants’ inert properties
and powers, in folk medicine verbal cues often accompany practical
application of potions. Incantations can be performed as empathic and affective
devices, to call out to the other-than-human world. As an act of echoing the
vegetal with desire to unravel shared poetic and visceral meanings.

X Steps Through A Forest, 2021 Series
of 15 soundtracks 38 min 40 sec

X Steps Through A Forest is an audio work that takes a form of an
experiential audio guide. It consists
of 15 tracks that as a series of movements lead the listener on a journey
through a forest. Guiding one’s awareness towards the resonances between
the forest environment and one's own body. The audio
work plays with the idea of the forest as a living mnemonic device, that evokes
memories as well as recomposes them as one moves through it.

The listeners
are encouraged to listen to the tracks during a walk through their neighboring
forest. But it is intended also for those who for any reason find themselves
unable to do so. With hopes that these mnemonic evocations help transpose
oneself into a lively
forest eco-system from wherever one is.

This work was
created for If Forests Talk, an online program
for Singapore Art Week 2021.

Approximities
presents us with a series of seemingly everyday vignettes. However, as the
characters move in and out of the frame, the scenes increasingly gain an air of
artifice.

The film builds
on my experiences visiting a local park while living in Singapore. Spending
long stretches of time at the park without
a particular aim in mind,
it has allowed my thoughts to roam freely and gently, amidst the
company of strangers. One by one, alongside the scenery and vegetation, these
strangers became a familiar presence. Reconstituting
this familiar park space through my memories, I engaged with a group of friends
in a long- distance choreography of enacting and translation. This process is a paradoxical task of establishing
common ground within an artificially constructed situation.

Can we think of a park as a virtual space or
vice versa, that enables us to
gather regardless of physical distance? How do we rearticulate proximity under
those conditions? How do we spend time?

A choreography loses its stage, a score loses its page and dancers lose their bodies. How does one enact a performance under such conditions? In the “staging” of Chimera Swagger, Djekić’s poem on gait recognition surveillance technology, we see hands overlap and aflutter. Moving transparent cut-out pieces of shapes, figures, and texts to a poem of choreographic inception. With their movements guided by visual intuition, we see a process as piece - where a multitude of hands come together in a composition. Volume-less figures move and blend within printed foliage, atop of “stages” to shape-shift against recognition. For it is within this flatness that our chimera redeems swagger.

Untitled (Shades), 2019
Artist book (produced and published by Browsing copy,
Singapore),
165 x 114 mm, offset print

This
artist book conflates multiple formats (play, poetry and choreographic score)
to explore visceral nature of the gaze. In six steps it leads the reader
through a landscape of memories and poetic reflections preoccupied with the act
of seeing and the embodied politics it implies. Each step appeals to the reader
to challenge their point of view in regard to the book, themselves and their
environment. As if existing outside of this book characters and letters throw
shade on its pages. Alongside sparse drawings and images, they interrupt and
complicate the narrative.

Minor Matters, 2019HD Video
7min

Over a course of an afternoon the video captures young musicians at practice. The camera flows from one student to another, following the rhythm of their movements as they repeat and vary through time. The proximity of the practice cubicles and the sunlight make for a play of reflections and transparencies. While the bodies in movement start to overlap, the sounds converge into a medley. The accompanying narration focuses on the very intimate and bodily relationship the students develop with their instruments.
This video was produced during a Cinemovement laboratory at

Casa San Miguel in Zambales, Phillipines.
